What types of scholarships are available?

Who can apply for scholarships?

You can apply for a scholarship if you:
Students who are not experiencing financial hardship should not apply.

What is the deadline for applying?

All applications must be received by the Scholarships Coordinator by the 10th December 2009. Late, faxed or emailed applications will not be accepted. Please see our important scholarship program dates for all dates associated with scholarship applications.

Can I apply for a scholarship if I am an international student?

No. The scholarships currently available are open to Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents only. However, we are committed to maximising scholarship opportunities for students and hope to expand our scholarship program in the future.

How are scholarship recipients selected?

The scholarships currently available are awarded on the basis of financial hardship. The scholarship panel will assess the information provided in your application form and will shortlist the appropriate candidate. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to attend an interview.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for as many different scholarships as you like. However, you can only receive one scholarship from Sydney Institute at any one time.

I made a mistake in my application form or supporting documents. Can I change my answers?

Provided it is before the scholarship application deadline, yes you can. Email the Scholarship Coordinator at SI.scholarship (AT) tafensw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Will I be notified that my application has been received?

Yes, you will receive notification acknowledging the receipt of your application.

When will I be notified of the outcome of my application?

You will receive notification of the outcome of your application by mid January 2010.

What happens if I am awarded a scholarship?

You will receive a notification that you have been awarded the scholarship. You will receive a scholarship recipient agreement that outlines the terms and conditions of accepting the scholarship. You will need to sign and submit this agreement and provide your bank account details for periodic transfers of the scholarship amount.

You will also be invited to events which relate to the scholarship program. Your name, profile and photograph may be used in promotional materials for Sydney Institute.

Do I need a good academic record for a scholarship?

The overarching selection criteria for the current scholarships is extreme financial hardship. An appropriate academic record is deemed as achieving a credit average and not failing any units undertaken. You may also detail in writing along with your application form if your financial circumstances have impacted your marks.

Is there an official scholarships presentation?

Yes, all scholarship recipients will be invited to a Scholarship Recipient presentation.

Can I defer a scholarship offer?

No. Deferring the scholarship offer will make the scholarship void. If you do want to defer, you are more than welcome to make a scholarship application by the next relevant deadline.

When and how do I receive payment for my scholarship?

You will be notified of the outcome of your scholarship application/s by mail. When you receive the letter acknowledging your success, you also will receive a scholarship recipient agreement.

Your bank account details need to be provided along with the signed scholarship recipient agreement. Your scholarship money will be transferred periodically to your nominated bank account.

Do I need to pay tax?

All scholarship payments made to students studying on a full-time basis, are tax exempt. If you are studying part time, you may be liable to pay tax on your scholarship. However Sydney Institute encourages each scholarship recipient to seek their own advice.

How can I spend the scholarship money?

Within your application form, you will have to provide a statement detailing how you will spend the scholarship amount. The amount will cover course fees and other course related expenses.

What will happen if I change my enrolment details during the scholarship period?

You must contact the Scholarships Coordinator as soon as possible – email: SI.scholarship (AT) tafensw.edu.au.

Can I apply for another scholarship if I transfer my course of study?

Yes. You may apply for another scholarship by the next relevant deadline, if you transfer your course of study.

Will receiving a scholarship affect my Centrelink benefits or taxable income for the year?

Students will need to contact the relevant government department in regards to their own personal circumstances. In some cases, students who receive a certain kind of Commonwealth benefit or allowance may be eligible for a concession at TAFE NSW Sydney Institute. As such you won’t need a scholarship as you may not be required to pay the entire course fees.
