ABOUT: The Certificate III of Spatial Information Services provides a broad introduction to the spatial industry with a strong focus on surveying, mathematics, computing and geographical information systems (GIS). A field expedition is included whereby students learn a range of spatial data capture techniques.
SKILLS COVERED: Collecting spatial data (levelling, global positioning systems (GPS); total stations; navigational aids); geographical information systems (GIS); using vector and raster spatial data; computer aided drafting; mathematics; survey theory; cartography; storing and retrieving spatial data; complex spreadsheets; organising and participating in field expeditions; computing and data management. |

What will you learn in the Spatial Information Services course?
This nationally recognised course is for Year 12 school leavers who wish work as professionals and para-professionals in the spatial industry (often referred to as Spatial Information Services (SIS) OR Geographic Information Systems (GIS.)
The use of GIS technology provides exciting opportunities to explore and investigate our world. GIS revolves around the spatial location of information. This information can take the form of maps or database material. The map and database work together so that you can query the position and context of a rare plant species on a map whilst the database offers type, age, size, condition etc. Selecting on the map brings up the supporting data whilst selecting from the database brings up the map location. |
|
In this course you will learn about:
• Mapping systems and techniques
• Geographic information systems and spatial operations
• Remote sensing
• Computer Aided Drafting
• Global Positioning Systems
At the completion of the course you will be able to collect, store and analyse data of varied types plus prepare maps and documentation based on that data. GIS has matured into a multi - disciplinary tool of great value to any industry where location and distribution are relevant. |

What you will learn in the Surveying course?
About: The Diploma of Surveying provides specialist skills and knowledge in all aspects of surveying. A strong practical focus gives learners extensive skill in the use of a wide range of survey and precision Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment in a range of industry contexts. In the laboratories, students gain valuable skills in leading survey and engineering software applications, and lectures provide the background to survey theory and mathematics. Attendance at three field expeditions is required to provide experiences in road design and set out and topographic surveying. |
|
Skills covered: Land and planning law; surveying; creating engineering drawings; subdivision survey design; advanced GPS; Real Time Kinematic GPS; set out and control survey; advanced survey computations; design road and railway; geodetic surveying; precision surveys; spatial data collection and validation; survey and GIS data integration; map design and production for land management purposes; undertake survey field expeditions |
