Free legal services for Student Association members

Sydney Institute and Redfern Legal Centre jointly provide a free legal service, three days a week, to students and staff who are members of the Student Association.

If you require advice on a legal matter, you can ring to make an appointment with our solicitor. To make an appointment please call the TAFE Legal Service on (02) 9217 5473.

Once you have made an appointment you can come and see us at the Ultimo College Institute Student Services Office at Building U, level 2, 622-632 Harris St (cnr Mary Ann St).

In any matter we cannot help you with, we will refer you to someone who can.

Redfern Legal Centre is a community legal centre that provides free legal advice if you can’t afford a lawyer. The Centre’s website www.rlc.org.au includes information on tenancy, credit and debt, and domestic violence as well as links to other sites offering legal assistance.

Drink driving charges

If you are convicted of drink driving with a mid-range blood alcohol level, the minimum disqualification period is six months. More information is available at Legal Aid NSW.

Superannuation contributions

If you earn over $450 in a calendar month, your employer must contribute nine per cent of your earnings to superannuation. The Australian Taxation Office can help with more information.

Renting and tenancy agreements

If you share a rented house or flat you should sign a Change of Shared Tenancy Arrangement form so that you can claim your share of the bond when you move. Visit the NSW Tenants’ Union site for more information.

Centrelink appeals

If Centrelink makes an unfavourable decision, you can appeal it. The National Welfare Rights Network has more information. Remember that time limits will apply!
