Historic signing for Design School

One of Australia’s finest design colleges and Australia’s popular boutique retail chain Coco Republic have officially joined forces.

Interior Design courses will now be delivered by Design Centre Enmore at the Coco Republic Design School.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for students who might have missed out on getting a place at Enmore for 2010, as well as for people who are looking to study in the evenings or Saturdays,’ Design Centre Enmore, Head Teacher, Interior Design, Kay Jeffreson said.

“Both organisations were keen to provide design student with an alternative learning experience.

“It will cover all the important facets of interior design while introducing the opportunity to gain first hand experience from the inside,” Kay said.

All Coco Republic courses are formally recognised by TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute. Each course offers a mix of nationally recognised accredited units.

Apprentice of the Year

Joseph Maniago has shown he’s got what it takes to succeed.

Winning the 2009 Master Builders Apprentice of the Year was a fitting tribute to his strong leadership skills, great academic record and maturity.

Joseph completed his Carpentry apprenticeship at Sutherland College, Gymea Campus as well as studying Building at St George College.

Joseph ditched university because he thought completing a trade was the best career path for him.

“I wanted to do a trade because I would get the hands-on skills to become a supervisor in the future,” Joseph said.

Joseph’s commitment to the building industry shows the industry’s future is in good hands!

From Sydney to Washington

Eora and Ultimo music teacher, Anthony Linden Jones is having his musical composition performed in Washington later in November.

Adapted from a score he wrote for a film The Last One, it’s part of an interpretation of a poem by Paul Verlaine. Featuring master bassoonist Franck Leblois, the composition will be performed by the Octava Chamber Orchestra.

“The film ends with an achingly sad scene that corresponded closely with my thoughts on the Verlaine poetry – so I was able to develop a melody that could suit both settings,” Anthony said.

Although originally trained as an electrical engineer, Anthony has been playing in orchestras and rock bands since he was a child.

He has an amazing range of musical experiences which he imparts to his students. Just another example of the brilliant and passionate teachers we have at Sydney Institute.

2009 ABC Women in Broadcast Technology Scholarship

Interested in a career in technology and media?

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation invites applications for the 2009 Women in Broadcast Technology Scholarships.

The ABC Technology Division enables the ABC’s creative arm to produce and deliver cutting edge and entertaining programs.

The Scholarships are awarded to one woman in each capital city and valued at $4,000 per year, including four weeks paid on the job training.

Who can apply?

The scholarships are based on a written application and interview if selected. To apply you must be female and:
• Be enrolled in a TAFE course related to Electronics Technology (Cert IV minimum), Diploma of Electrical Engineering or Electronic and Communications Engineering
• Be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident
• Be able to demonstrate an interest in technology and broadcasting

TAFE talent films first ever SI YouTube campaign

An all TAFE production team pulled off a successful, action packed film shoot. This is the second film shoot TAFE students have completed, for a series of YouTube comedy clips to promote TAFE training.

Students worked on all aspects of production from concept creation, right through to production planning, filming and post-production.
Film and Television (Screen) students worked directing, on camera, sound and general production to bring to life campaign concepts created by Advertising students. TAFE trained makeup artists created great special FX .

Mitch Smith is at the forefront of Australian film makers of the future. He’s just scored himself $3,000 for winning at the PNAN Youth Arts Festival with his short film Try Before You Buy.

It’s a film with a definite twist!

Mitch completed his Certificate III in Screen and Media at Sutherland College, Gymea Campus.

“It’s a great course with brilliant teachers who give you a good insight to the industry and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get into the film industry,” said Mitch.

Mitch’s future will see him making more short films and hopefully feature length films.

Helping hand for skilled migrants

Getting a job in your chosen career is not always easy. It’s even harder for skilled migrants who come to Australia. They have the talent and skills needed, but face numerous barriers when they try to enter the workforce.

TAFE can help.

I applied for many jobs in my field but I didn’t get any positive/proper responses. This course has helped me develop my career. The teaching atmosphere was very professional, friendly and logical. The work experience followed by formal classroom studies was a sound opportunity to put our past skills and classroom training into practice. I was offered a casual role of an assistant administration officer (my first job) by my training/work placement organisation. The best part of my work placement was it gave me a very sound local experience, local professional referees, new contacts, opportunity to learn new accounting system and some extra money in times when I was in utmost need of it. I would like to recommend this course to all the overseas trained professionals who have migrated to Australia who are not able to make it over here due to one or another reason.
