Radio & News Media at Petersham College
If you want a career in radio or a career in news media, we offer a suite of hands-on courses designed to get you there. We offer courses in news media, radio broadcasting and communications media; they are developed in consultation with industry and all are skills-focused.
We deliver our news media and radio courses in Sydney at the West Street campus, Petersham TAFE in an
industry focussed learning environment equipped to meet contemporary media standards.
The Communications and Media staff are
passionate professionals who are up to date with the latest industry trends. Our teachers will provide you with the skills the radio and media industry demands so that you have every chance to achieve your career goal.
Our courses
The communication, radio broadcasting and media courses we run at TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute, Petersham College include:
- Diploma Communications and Media – Course 9075 (1 year full-time)
- Certificate IV – Course 19246 Screen and Media (pre-requisite Course 19243 or Course 19221)
- Certificate IV – Course 19222 News Media (3 days per week for 18 weeks)
- Certificate III – Course 19243 Media (Radio) – (1 year part-time, evenings, 6 hours p/week)
- Certificate III – Course 19243 Media (Radio) – (2 days per week for 18 weeks)
Electives across all the Media Courses are selected from the Radio Presenting and Sound Editing suite of modules.

Day or evening classes
Our communication, news media and radio broadcasting courses are ideal for school leavers, young adults and mature age students. Both full time day classes and part time night classes operate all year round. All our radio and media courses are designed to be fun and interactive – just like our teachers.
Media industry skills focus
Our courses will teach you the basic skills and knowledge to develop your media or broadcasting career. Training is focused on developing skills applicable to the relevant industry.
Skills taught in our courses may include interviewing, writing for print, electronic or broadcast media, editing, presenting, copy writing, project management, promotions, studio operations, on-air presentation skills, the use of Web 2.0 tools, or planning and preparing programs for broadcast.
