Applying for an internship - resumes & letters

When applying for an internship through Sydney Institute you should take special care in the presentation of your resume and cover letter. We use your resume and cover letter to talk to companies about you, so these are very important documents.

Resume Guidelines

  1. Make your resume between 1 and 2 pages long.

  2. Detail your work experience. Start with your most recent job and go backwards. You can include paid work and volunteer positions. Describe your work and any challenges or achievements.

  3. Detail your qualifications. Start with your most recent qualification and go backwards.

  4. Detail your skills, including computer skills, English language level and any other languages you speak.

  5. Briefly mention your interests.

  6. Make sure you check your spelling and punctuation carefully.

Cover Letter Guidelines

  1. Make your cover letter 1 page long and use paragraphs.

  2. Write “Dear Sir/Madam,” at the top and “Yours faithfully,” at the end.

  3. Write one paragraph on what you can contribute to the organisation – any relevant experience at work, college or university and the skills you have. Be very clear how the internship relates to your studies or your job.

  4. Write one paragraph about your personality and how you can fit in to the company.

  5. Write one paragraph on what type of organisation you would like to work for and what you want to achieve in your internship.
