Study overseas next semester
What is an international exchange?
Sydney Institute offers students the opportunity to study as an exchange student overseas in a number of subject areas. You could spend a semester studying in the Denmark, Singapore or Japan and gain credit towards your studies at Sydney Institute.
Exchange programs are currently open to Sydney Institute students in the following areas:
- Architectural Technology
- IT Networking
- Jewellery and Object Design.
Exchange programs for Semester 1, 2013 will be available in the following areas:
- Marketing
- Mechanical Engineering.
There may be a scholarship available to you depending on which exchange program you apply for.

You don’t need to speak another language to go on these exchange programs!

The cost of each exchange will depend on where you go. You will need to consider the cost of return airfares, living, accommodation and daily travel expenses, and additional costs such as passport, visa and travel insurance fees.
Depending on which program you apply for, there may also be some government or Sydney Institute funding available for you.
You will also need to enrol and pay your Sydney Institute tuition fees for that semester before you go on exchange.

You must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident, and you may either be studying part time or full time, depending on the program you are applying for. The program is open to students at Sydney Institute in the following areas:
Architectural Technology students
- You must be enrolled in the Diploma of Architectural Technology.
- You will enrol and pay your normal tuition fees at Sydney Institute for the semester you are away.
- You can study at either VIA University College, Denmark, or Copenhagen School of Design and Technology, Denmark.
IT (Networking)
- You will enrol in the Certificate IV – Information Technology (Networking) for the semester you are away and pay your fees to Sydney Institute for this course.
- The exchange will be for 3 months, from September to December.
Jewellery and Object Design
- You will complete the project component of your Advanced Diploma in Jewellery and Object Design while on exchange.
- This exchange is for a maximum of 90 days due to visa restrictions.
Marketing students
- You can study in Denmark in Semester 1, 2013.
- You must be studying the Certificate 4 in Marketing in the semester prior to your exchange.
- You will enrol in the Sydney Institute Diploma of Marketing and pay your normal tuition fees for the semester you are away.
- Study at VIA University College, Denmark.
Mechanical Engineering students
- You can study in Denmark in Semester 1, 2013.
- You must be in Stage 2 of the Advanced Diploma of Mechanical Engineering in Semester 2, 2012.
- You will need to study Calculus in 2012 instead of 2013 – please talk to your Head Teacher this semester if you intend to apply for this exchange.
- You will enrol in Stage 3 of Sydney Institute’s Advanced Diploma of Mechanical Engineering for the semester you are away and pay your normal tuition fees for the semester.

Applications now open There is an application and selection process you must complete. Application forms are available from your Head Teacher and on this web page:
The application process includes:
- submitting a written application, including a completed application form and details of 2 referees
- if you are shortlisted you will be invited to an interview with panel members which may include your section’s Assistant Director, Head Teacher and a representative from the International Business Unit.
Closing date for applications
Late applications will only be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Step 1Read the
International Exchange FAQs document carefully.
Complete the application form, fill in your name at the top of each page and sign the Declaration and Agreement.
IMPORTANT: Take your time with the application and complete it carefully – complete all the questions thoughtfully and check your spelling. We will select the strongest applications, and then there will be an interview to choose the final Exchange students.
Applications require the following documents:
- completed application form (typed responses wherever possible), or legible handwriting. Illegible or incomplete applications will not be considered
- details of two referees
- photocopy of current Australian passport, Citizenship Certificate or proof of Permanent Residency.
Step 2
After completing the application form, review the checklist above to ensure that you have included the relevant supporting documents, and then submit your application.
Details of how to submit applications and the submission deadline will be available on this website or through your Head Teacher.

Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, Japan
Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry is the only Jewelry school in Tokyo authorized by the school education law. The college not only enjoys constant international visitors in jewelry and art all year round, but also invites overseas jewelry artists every year to hold summer workshops and slide lectures. The school has well established ties with overseas universities through student exchanges and joint exhibitions. Such international events are held throughout the year at Hiko Mizuno. Hiko Mizuno has partnerships with 58 schools in 16 countries, and has hosted more than 160 international students.

Copenhagen School of Design and Technology is an institution which offers a large number of higher education courses. Their mission is to educate highly skilled and professional designers, communicators and technologists who are able to work in an international context. Their aim is to become a centre for education, knowledge development and knowledge sharing within Denmark and across borders. As such Copenhagen School of Design and Technology is dedicated to the concept of widening international co-operation as a fundamental basis for high quality teaching and learning.
KEA considers continuous international and cross cultural development crucial and aims to continually increase their international activities, including student and staff mobility. They have a range of degree programs available in English, and a large international student community and support services for international students.

VIA University College, Denmark
All classes are in English – you don’t need to speak Danish to join this exchange.
VIA University College is unique in Denmark. No similar institution provides such a varied range of programs at so many different levels. VIA takes pride in the fact that many of the students are international and that many of the courses are offered in English. Each year several hundred international students enrol at the institution, and VIA staff make sure that everything is provided to make their overseas experience successful. We are confident that the team at VIA will take good care of you.
VIA is in Horsens, Jutland, about 2.5 hours from Copenhagen by train. Horsens has over 50,000 inhabitants and lies at the end of Horsens Fjord in eastern Jutland. The city is surrounded by low hills and valleys created by glaciers during the last ice ages. Nearby towns include Aarhus (50 km to the north) and Vejle (30 km to the south).
