Building upon the success of our Diploma and Advanced Diploma programs, Sydney Institute is introducing the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design).

This career-focussed higher education program represents a convergence of the practical and theoretical aspects of design. It offers a diverse educational experience, exploring the scope of international creative design practice.

The 3 year degree offers:
  • studio-based learning environments where students engage in group projects to simulate interior design practices in the real world
  • an Interior Design internship which offers an outstanding work placement opportunity for students to put their knowledge into practice
  • a multidisciplinary approach which helps students develop a practical understanding of other design disciplines

Course aims

The degree aims to develop highly creative, technically skilled interior design professionals.

During the course of your study, you will be expected to develop the following competencies:

  • understanding of the interaction between interior spaces and the people that use them

Career options

At Sydney Institute, the future is yours to create, so prepare to make your mark in interior design.

Based in an interior or architectural design practice, you could be designing a wide variety of interior environments, including:
  • single and multi-level residential spaces
  • large scale apartment complexes
  • exhibitions
  • virtual interior environments, including areas of gaming and animation
  • corporate design, including offices
  • hospitality design, including hotels, bars and restaurants
  • retail design
  • set design in film, television and theatre.
The role of an Interior Designer is to:
  • design the interiors of buildings such as offices, shops, restaurants, houses, hotels, libraries and hospitals
  • design exhibitions, temporary installations and commercial display stands
  • work with clients, architects and other consultants to analyse client needs, intentions and safety requirements.
  • create and deliver visual presentations for clients
  • custom design or specify furniture, lighting, walls, partitions, flooring, colour, fabrics and graphics to produce an environment tailored to a purpose
  • prepare working drawings and specifications for interior construction
  • plan and advise on structural alterations to existing buildings
  • estimate costs based on the value of materials, layout and time, and submit estimates to clients for approval
  • organise the purchasing of furnishings and the tendering, contracting and supervision of the tradespeople required to implement a project.

Articulation

Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Interior Design will be able to fulfill the requirements of the degree in only one year by completing two specified subjects from second year and six specified subjects from third year (80 credit points).
