Educating to Promote Sustainability

Wilkins Green – Landcare 2007 award nominee

Living classroom
Wilkins Green is a living Classroom connected to Petersham TAFE Outreach where crops are harvested and natural products produced. The project involved the creation of a no-dig garden on the school grounds based on principles like companion planting, composting and rotation gardening methods. The garden also supports chickens which are fed on weeds and food scraps from the classroom, they in turn provide manure for the garden as well as eggs.

How it started
Starting in 2004 the Wilkins Green project grew out of a partnership between Petersham TAFE Outreach, Wilkins Primary School, Globe Pre-school and Marrickville Community Nursery.

Hands on learning
The living class room is used to teach TAFE outreach and school students about bush regeneration, domestic sustainability, biodiversity, cultural diversity, indigenous land management practices, live cycle analysis and environmental stewardship.
