Ceramic Design Studio - Studying Ceramics

A leader in its field, the Ceramic Design Studio (the Studio) at Sutherland College Gymea, Sydney Institute offers a broad range of high quality courses in studio ceramics.

Students have access to highly skilled and experienced lecturers who offer quality training in specialist areas of slipcasting and mould making, tableware design and production, handbuilding and ceramic technologies.

Our facilities

The Studio is well equipped with wheels, spray booth, glaze and mould making facilities, and a large new drawing studio. A broad range of firing options is available including electric, gas, wood and raku firing in our on site kilns.

Our courses

A part of TAFE NSWSydney Institute, the Studio offers flexible ceramics courses which cater to both beginners and professionals, who wish to upgrade skills and knowledge in contemporary ceramic practice. Students gain ceramics qualifications at Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma level.


Students have the opportunity to develop excellent technical, aesthetic and conceptual skills through a logically sequenced series of programs. This ensures the best quality individual and group learning opportunities for all students.

As of 2008, the Ceramics Design Studio has a current enrolment of 135 students, 3 full time and 10 part time lecturers over their ceramics course programs.
